What's the best way for me to train?
For some people, completing a Certificate or Diploma course at a TAFE or a Private Training Provider gives them excellent skills, and helps them to get their first job where they can progress up the career ladder. For others, starting off as a Trainee or Apprentice and doing their training on-the-job works well.
Some employers offer support for your training by providing in house programs. These range from short courses to training programs.
About the industry
Tourism and Hospitality is a major growth industry and will continue to expand rapidly up to and beyond the year 2000. It is an industry which creates economic and employment opportunities throughout Australia and provides you with an exciting and worthwhile career.
The Tourism sector of the industry deals mainly with travel, both local and overseas, and includes travel agencies, tourist information offices, tour wholesalers, attractions, meetings and conventions and tour guiding.
The Hospitality sector of the industry provides food and beverage and accommodation to both visitors and local residents. It includes hotels, motels, resorts, restaurants, clubs and casinos.
There are more than 500,000 people employed by the tourism and hospitality industry in Australia. This is expected to increase to more than 650,000 by the year 2000. Tourism and hospitality is big business and growing fast!
Tourism and hospitality is a people business, which means that face-to-face contact with customers is an essential part of working in the industry. People who want to succeed in the industry should have the following:
